US-listed Safe Bulkers, Inc. has launched a scholarship programme worth €100,000 for student cadets at the Cyprus Maritime Academy/Intercollege.

The annual scholarships of €5,000 are geared towards the four-year deck officer course at the Academy, with the institution matching the amount with an equal scholarship, fully covering tuition fees for top-grade students.

The Safe Bulkers scholarships, covering the cost of tuition fees and living expenses, are renewed annually subject to the recipients’ satisfactory academic progress and successful promotion to the next year.

Safe Bulkers will provide all students sea-service training onboard its modern, energy-efficient, Cyprus-flagged vessels equipped with high-speed satellite internet connectivity. Upon graduation, it will also offer full employment leading to a career as deck officers up to Captain Class A and prospective placement as Port Captains or fleet operators in the marine department of its Limassol-based offices.

“We are proud to work with the Cyprus Maritime Academy and support young people who are interested in embarking on a career at sea and excel as deck officers who could later promote to Masters,” said Safe Bulkers CEO Polys V. Hajioannou.

“This scholarship programme, combined with the Safe Bulkers Annual Scholarship Program for studies in marine engineering and other maritime fields, aims to enable and encourage young individuals to further their education and pursue a professional career in the maritime industry,” Hajioannou said.

Largest shipowner

Being the largest shipowner under the Cyprus Registry with 16 vessels flying the Cyprus flag, Safe Bulkers said it is, “firmly committed to developing a pool of highly educated young talents equipped with the academic skills necessary to join the Cyprus workforce in the future, in the efforts to enhance the strength and growth of the Cyprus maritime cluster.”

These scholarships are dedicated to students in Naval Engineering, Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Computer Engineering, Automation, Computer Science, Cyber Security, and Shipping Law.

Specifically targeted at Cypriot citizens or Greek citizens settled in Cyprus, these scholarships are aimed at Lyceum-level graduates in Cyprus, as well as those pursuing studies at universities in Greece, the United Kingdom, and other respected institutions worldwide.
