Cyprus reported another six cases of COVID-19 on Thursday from 1,774 tests that were carried out, taking the total since the outbreak in March to 889 (including 10 in the British Bases).

Although the numbers are low, Cyprus only had two infections on Monday.

From Thursday’s cases, three were identified from 166 tests carried out on contacts of known coronavirus cases in the context of tracking and tracing.

One case was found from 595 lab tests conducted through private initiative.

Two cases were identified after tests carried out on people who were asked to get tested before going in for an operation or being admitted to a hospital.

No one was positive from 64 tests on employees in the retail food and beverage industry or care homes for the elderly.

Presenting the epidemiological data regarding new COVID-19 cases, Dr Leontios Kostrikis said that Thursday’s low number of new cases shows that Cyprus is doing all the right things.

Some 9 people are inpatients at Famagusta General, which operates as the COVID-19 reference hospital. One of them is in the Acute Care Unit.

Their condition is described as stable, one patient was discharged from the hospital.

Five patients are breathing with the help of a ventilator, one at Limassol General Hospital ICU and four at Nicosia General Hospital ICU.

The condition of all patients in the ICUs is described as “critical but stable.”

Dr Marios Loizou highlighted the importance of individual responsibility as measures are eased and more people come into contact with each other.

He urged people to self-monitor themselves and contact their general practitioner in case they have one of the symptoms of COVID-19, such as dry cough, fever, sore throat or shortness of breath.

Globally, the number of coronavirus cases is close to 3.85 million and deaths are 266,000.
