Cyprus police mobilized on Monday to deal with the first phase of easing the coronavirus lockdown by increasing the number of checks to ensure social distancing and stay home rules are kept.

Police spokesman Christos Andreou said that the force will intensify spot checks and their duties will increase as thousands go back to work and venturing outside the home is eased.

“We are here to ensure strict adherence to the measures. Our aim is public health and safety. We are supported by the Shipping Deputy Ministry, the National Guard, Civil Defence, the Game service and others,” said Andreou.

With thousands going back to work and people allowed three trips outside the home a day, Andreou said that police will have their hands full.

“Our aim is not to report people but to help them get through the pandemic with as less (COVID-19) cases as possible.

“We will be out on the streets to help the people overcome this situation.”

Andreou said there are 110 patrol vehicles and 250 officers deployed on the streets with increased patrols during the day.

“The police will report people where necessary.”

He urged the people to comply with government decrees and to faithfully adhere to hygiene rules and personal protection measures.
