TRAVEL: Passenger traffic at Cyprus airports increases 3.7%

Cyprus airports has seen a small increase in passenger traffic, giving hope to tourism industry stakeholders that 2019 will not be far off last year’s all-time record of almost 4 million tourist arrivals.

According to Hermes Airports, during the four-month period January-April 2019, 2.26 million passengers passed through the Larnaca and Paphos airports, recording an increase of 3.7% from the 2.18 million who visited the island in the same period in 2018.

The increase is mainly attributable to the flow at Paphos airport. In the first four months of the year 641,100 passengers passed through Paphos airports gates, that is 13.4% more than the previous year.

Meanwhile, Larnaca airport saw a minor increase of 0.3% with passenger traffic amounting to 1.62 million in the first four months of the year, compared to 1.61 million the previous year.

During April alone, a 3.7% upswing was recorded at Paphos, while the increase at the Larnaca was a lower 1.2%.

In 2018 the number of passengers at the two airports in Larnaca and Paphos reached record levels of 10.9 million, recording an increase of 6.7% compared to 2017.

Tourist arrivals to Cyprus in March dropped for the first time since June 2015 mainly due to a fall from the island’s main holiday markets Britain, Greece and Germany.
