FTSEurofirst below 1,000; on track for record slump

LONDON, Oct 6 (Reuters) – A key pan-European share index plummbeted 8.6 percent in late trade on Monday, on track for its worst one-day percentage fall on record and puncturing a key level for the first time in four years.

The pan-European FTSEurofirst 300 index was down 7.6 percent at 1,007.30, after falling as much as 8.6 percent to 996.02, below 1,000 for the first time since late October 2004.

Banks were the top losers, led by Royal Bank of Scotland which 19.4 percent, while UBS fell 13.5 percent.

But energy shares took most points off the index, with Total , BP and Royal Dutch Shell falling 7.3-9 percent.
