Cyprus retail trade up provisional 6.6% in Jan-Sep

Retail trade volumes in Cyprus have risen strongly so far in 2006, growing by 6.6% in January-September 2006 compared with the corresponding period of 2005, according to preliminary data for September.

According to provisional estimates, the turnover volume index of retail trade for September 2006 increased by 0.2 units to 130.7 units, a rise of 8.2% on September 2005.

Values have risen even higher. In January to September 2006, retail trade values rose by 8.4% compared with Jan-Sep 2005, again according to provisional data for September.

 

Bodies and bellies

 

The strongest demand appears to be for healthcare and food products. The largest increase to date has been recorded in the sector of pharmaceuticals, up by 14.4% year on year in the first nine months, followed by sales of food, beverages and tobacco in specialist stores, up by 12.5%.

Demand for large household goods: sales of furniture, household goods and electrical items were up by 9.5% year on year in January-September. F.M.
