Cyprus unemployment falls to 3.1%

The registered unemployment rate in Cyprus fell for the third consecutive month on May, reaching 3.1% of the laboru force, compared with 3.2% in April. However, the unemployment rate was still a little higher than the 2.8% recorded in May 2004.

The number of registered unemployed fell by 193 on the previous month and reached 10,941. The Statistical Service CYSTAT reported that the decrease of the unemployed persons from the previous month was mainly recorded in the sector of hotels and restaurants.

Unemployment among hotel and restaurant workers was also down on the year-earlier period.

However, the sectors of construction, public administration and retail and wholesale trade recorded a rise.
