President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias has said that the future of Cypriots, Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots alike, is in a united and peaceful homeland, in which international law and the European principles and values will be respected.

Addressing Wednesday evening the graduation ceremony at the European University of Cyprus, the Cypriot President stressed that “Greek Cypriots will never seize being Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots will never seize being Turkish Cypriots, but we must all feel Cypriots and love our country the same way, so that prospects for a happy future are created for our children and grandchildren”.

The future of Cypriots, he said, is in a “united and peaceful homeland”, in which international law and the European principles and values will be respected.

The Republic of Cyprus became a full EU member state in May 2004. Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third.
