An 84-year-old Limassol man confessed to killing his 82-year-old wife with a hammer after a heated argument on Monday, police said.

According to the head of the Limassol Criminal Investigation Department, Lefteris Kyriacou, the 84-year-old turned himself into the local CID unit, telling officers he had killed his wife, striking her with a hammer blow to the head.

Kyriacou said police rushed to the victim’s house in Ayios Ioannis, Limassol, where they found 82-year-old Georgia Charalambous lying dead in a pool of blood in the yard of their home.

The scene has been sealed off, and investigations are at an early stage.

He said the woman seemed to have been hit with a hammer on the head.

It is believed the couple allegedly had a heated argument over personal matters when things turned ugly, and the 84-year-old fatally injured his wife.

Kyriacou said the elderly couple has never before attracted the attention of authorities.

According to media reports, the 84-year-old delivered five blows to his wife’s head, with evidence indicating that he had struck her from behind.

A post-mortem will be carried out by medical forensic examiners Angeliki Papetta and Orthodoxos Orthodoxou.
