CYPRUS Government employed personnel remains stable at 51,486

The number of government employees remained relatively unchanged at 51,486 in August 2019, compared with 51,475 in the same month last year, despite an increase in temporary staff.


Official figures showed that permanent staff decreased by 444 or 1.5%, from 28,682 to 28,238 persons, while temporary staff increased by 5% reaching 14,800 persons compared with 14,091 persons in August 2018.

Compared to August 2018 there was an increase of staff in both the Civil Service and in Education. The largest increase was observed in Education (1.2%) due to the number of casual staff which increased by 11.7% (324 persons).

Employees in all categories decreased compared with July 2019 except for staff in the Security Forces which remained stable.

The highest decrease was in Education with 3.8% which was mainly down to a 14.3% decrease in temporary staff.

Government employment includes the Civil Service, Educational Service, Security Forces staff and Hourly Paid Workers.

Civil Service includes permanent and casual staff of the Ministries, Departments and Services. Educational Service includes the permanent and casual educational staff of schools and the staff of the Cyprus Productivity Centre and Higher Hotel Institute.

Security Forces include Police, Fire Service and the National Guard. Hourly Paid Workers include regular, casual and seasonal staff.
