CYPRUS: Trade deficit up in Jan-Sep

The trade deficit of foreign trade increased to EUR 3,165.5 mln in January-September compared to EUR 3,003.4 mln in the corresponding period of 2016, according to the Statistical Service, Cystat. The increase is mainly due to the increase in imports, although exports also increased compared to the same period of 2016.

Total imports (covering total imports from third countries and from EU Member States) in January-September amounted to EUR 5,434.4 mln, compared to EUR 5,085.3 mln in January-September 2016. Total exports (covering total exports to third countries and to EU Member States) in January-September 2017 were EUR 2,268.9 mln compared to EUR 2,081.9 mln in January-September 2016.

In September 2017, total imports (covering total imports from third countries and from EU Member States) valued at EUR 534.7 mln, compared to EUR 516.7 mln in September 2016.

Total exports (covering total exports to third countries and to EU Member States), including stores and provisions, in September 2017 amounted to EUR 261.8 mln, compared to EUR 270.7 mln in September 2016. Exports of domestically produced goods, including stores and provisions in September 2017 were EUR 89.6 mln, compared to EUR 91.8 mln in September 2016, whilst exports of foreign goods, including stores and provisions, in September 2017 were EUR 172.2 mln, compared to EUR 178.9 mln in September 2016.

Total domestic exports of industrial products in September 2017 were EUR 82.8 mln compared to EUR 85.8 mln in September 2016. Total domestic exports of agricultural products in September 2017 were EUR 5.1 mln compared to EUR 4.2 mln in September 2016.

On the basis of preliminary estimates for Foreign Trade in October, total imports were EUR 882.7 mln, of which EUR 420.9 mln were imports from other EU Member States and EUR 461.8 mln imports from Third Countries.

Total exports were EUR 182.4 mln of which EUR 79.4 mln were exports to other Member States of E.U. and EUR 103.0 mln exports to Third Countries.
