Cypriot Ombudswoman Eliza Savvidou has warned that human trafficking continues to constitute a real, serious and diverse problem in Cyprus, which is the most critical human rights violation and a serious crime.

On his part, Minister of the Interior Socrates Hasikos assured, on the occasion of the EU Anti-Trafficking Day, on October 18, that combating human trafficking for sexual and labour exploitation, which are the most frequent kinds of human trafficking in Cyprus, is one of the priorities of the ministry and the competent coordinating group.

Hasikos referred to the fact that legislation was voted this year in line with the EU directive on combating human trafficking and protecting its victims, adding that at the same time the 2013-2015 National Action Plan against human trafficking is being implemented, setting a comprehensive framework adjusted to Cyprus` particularities.

He stressed that human trafficking is a very serious crime, a hideous violation of fundamental human rights and transnational organized crime which cannot be easily addressed.

In her press release, Savvidou said that addressing this problem must remain among the state`s priorities to minimize adverse repercussions for the victims and protect human rights.

Furthermore, she stressed the need for vigilance and coordination by all public sector services, the non-government institutions, civil society and society at large.

Savvidou assured that her office will continue to monitor issues concerning this problem with increased interest and support every action aiming at easing difficulties and fulfilling the common goal for effective prevention and for combating human trafficking and exploitation.
