The US recognises the right of the Republic of Cyprus to develop its resources in its exclusive economic zone, Jen Psaki, State Department spokesperson has said, in response to questions on Turkey`s provocative moves in the Eastern Mediterranean relating to Cyprus.

“We recognise the right of the Republic of Cyprus to develop its resources within its exclusive economic zone. We continue to believe that the natural gas and oil reserves of the island, as well as all its resources, must be fairly shared between the two communities in the framework of a comprehensive settlement,” she added.

Psaki also said it was important to avoid activities which could increase tension in the region and reaffirmed US support for UN efforts to reunite Cyprus in a bizonal bicommunal federation.
