One of the gas turbines with an output capacity of 75 megawatts is ready for operation once the whole Unit 4 at Vassiliko power station is up and running, some time before the end of 2012, the Electricity Authority of Cyprus announced.
Unit 4 still has a second gas turbine and a steam turbine that have to be tested and ready for operation, which once completed will add 220 MW to the national power grid. The value of the contracts was not disclosed.
EAC said that work on the restoration of Units 1, 2 and 3 at Vassiliko are continuing “with an intensive pace” and will be ready for commercial use before the summer of 2013.
The state-owned power company has been burdened with direct and indirect losses amounting to about 1 bln euros after its main power station at Vassiliko was decimated following a deadly blast at a nearby naval base in July 2011. EAC has been trying to bring the power station back online, replacing the nearly 1200 MW in lost output from rented turbines and other sources, while renewables, mainly wind farms, have a contributed a further 90MW to the national power grid.
