The pediatric clinic of the Archbishop Makarios III Hospital in Nicosia and King's College Hospital in London have signed a memorandum of cooperation in the sectors of liver and gastrointestinal diseases.

Cypriot Minister of Health Stavros Malas, who was present at the ceremony, said Cyprus, as a small country, must have high quality medical treatment, given the low number of cases, and must expand its cooperation with specialised centres abroad.

He said Monday's agreement paves the way for similar cooperation for adults, adding that it was also necessary to create telemedicine infrastructure.

Senior Executive Director of King's College Hospital Alastair Baker said the signing of the Memorandum would secure the continuous cooperation between the two hospitals, adding that this cooperation was the key to developing the services the children in Cyprus deserve.

He said the most important aspect of the agreement was that King's College Hospital would provide a position specialising in hepatology for a Cypriot doctor in London, which would in turn provide the Makarios Hospital with the expertise to carry out more diagnostic work and treatment in Cyprus.

Baker also pointed out that the agreement allows for more specialisations to be included, such as pediatric neurology, neurosurgery and cardiology.

The Memorandum was signed by Malas, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health Dionysios Mavronicholas, Executive Director of the Makarios Hospital Petros Matsas, Baker and Pediatric Liver Specialist Babu Vadalayan.
