Britain strongly backs French Finance Minister Christine Lagarde as an outstanding candidate for managing director of the International Monetary Fund, British Prime Minister David Cameron said on Friday.

He made the comment at a new conference during a Group of Eight summit in the northern French seaside town of Deauville.

The IMF post is open after Dominique Strauss-Kahn quit. Cameron said many at the G8 event agreed with Britain's view.

"The one thing everybody says is that she is clearly a very strong candidate, that she has what it takes in terms of political leadership, experience and respect as a finance minister, not just in Europe but more widely," he said.

"I would say very strong support for her candidature from a range of different conversations that I have had."

"We strongly support her. We think there is a good case for maintaining European leadership at this difficult time. We think she is an outstanding candidate."
