Cyprus unemployment (sa) jumps 4.5% over previous month

The rise of unemployment in Cyprus seems to be relentless, with registered unemployment rising on a seasonally adjusted basis by 4.5% compared with the previous month in April.
The absolute number of unemployed persons was reached 26,911 persons, a rise of 5,278 or 24.4% compared with April 2011.
The Statistical Service reported that the increase was mainly in the sectors of wholesale and retail trade (an increase of 1,05), construction (704), accommodation and food services (629), education (418), manufacturing (389), and transportation and storage (an increase of 260).
There was an increase of 1,273 in the number of newcomers in the labour market.
