Analog television transmissions will be terminated on July 1st 2011 said here today Minister of Communication and Works Erato Kozakou Markoulli, adding that Cypriot citizens have much to gain from the transition to digital television.

Speaking during a seminar on the subject of how digital television will affect Cypriot citizens Markoulli said that the transition to the digital era does not change the role television plays in our lives but rather the way in which we receive what is offered to us.

There are many different kinds of digital television networks she said mentioning among others satellite, cable and terrestrial networks, explaining that already several satellite and cable networks are in operation in Cyprus.

Markoulli said that during 2010 the authorities completed the licensing procedure of two terrestrial wireless digital television networks, adding that one of them is already in operation by CYBC, whilst the other is expected to start operating soon.

“These networks”, she noted, “will replace the analog television transmissions”, adding that “until July 1st 2011, whereby the analog television transmissions will be terminated, they will be operating in parallel with each other”.

Some of the great advantages of digital television, she said, are the absolute clarity of image and quality of sound as well as the variety of choice of different channels.

She also spoke of other advantages the digital era in television will bring such as subtitling services, video on demand and interactive services.

The transition to digital television will open new horizons as far as news and entertainment are concerned at a very low cost, Markoulli said, adding that anyone will be able to purchase a simple, inexpensive decoder and continue to use their existing television.
