Figures from the Cyprus Statistical Service show that tourists from Ireland were the biggest spenders in June, spending on average EUR 1,188 per person, or EUR 116.8 per day, compared with a low of EUR 329 per person or EUR 77.7 per day for Israelis.
Of course, distance explains much of the difference: tourists from Ireland come from much further away, so are likely to spend more on tickets than those who are less than an hour’s flight away.
More telling are the figures from countries that are approximately the same distance. Here, Russians (the second biggest market after the UK) stand out, as spending on average EUR 1,004 per person, compared with EUR 625 for the UK and a low of EUR 451 for Sweden (fourth largest market).
Total revenue from tourism reached EUR 175.4 mln in June 2009, a fall of 23.6% compared with the EUR 229.6 mln recorded in June 2008.
For the period January – June 2009 revenue is estimated at EUR 565.8 mln, compared with EUR 671.9 mln in the corresponding period of 2008, recording a decrease of 15.8%.
Tourism arrivals in the same period fell by 10.8%.
Meanwhile, outbound tourism figures show that 97,713 residents of Cyprus returned from a trip abroad in June 2009, a drop of 4.2% compared with the 101,973 recorded in the corresponding month of 2008.
There was a decrease of 10.0% in the number of trips of residents to Greece (32,068 in June 2009 compared with 35,617 in June 2008).
