British retailers will likely keep discounting through the first half of 2010, according to a survey from PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC).

The PwC survey of 100 high street retailers said the current level of discounting on Britain's high streets was similar to pre-Christmas and January sales, indicating the retail sector remained under pressure.

Discounting is spread across all retail segments, with luxury brands, mid-market fascias and value players all promoting sales.

"Discounting will be an ongoing trend for UK retailers for the rest of 2009 and through the first half of 2010. This is good news for consumers, but less positive for retailers, whose margins have been and will continue to be under constant pressure," said Mark Hudson, head of PwC's UK retail and consumer team.
