EU aid for Turkish Cypriot schools

The European Commission has awarded grants worth from 16,000 to 50,000 euros to 17 schools in the northern part of Cyprus. Projects cover a variety of fields ranging from establishment of computer or language laboratories, teacher trainings, participation at conferences abroad, environmental awareness raising, physical education, special education to vocational education subjects. The projects will help teachers raise standards to international levels.
The grants cover up to 90% of the cost of each school’s project. Activities will be implemented over a period of up to 24 months and the beneficiaries will receive thorough guidance on how to proceed, starting on the day of signing the contract.
The following schools have been awarded a grant: Anafartalar High School, Atatürk Primary School, Bayraktar Türk Maarif Koleji, Bekirpasa Lisesi, Büyükkonuk Primary School, Demokrasi Secondary School, Dikmen Primary School, Eastern Mediterranean Primary School, Famagusta Special Education School, Fazil Plümer Pre-primary School, GazimaÄ?usa Türk Maarif Koleji, Güzelyurt Vocational School, Haspolat Vocational High School, Lapta Yavuzlar Lycee, Ã…?ht. Tuncer Primary School, Türk Maarif Koleji, and 9 Eylül Primary School.
This was the second Call for Proposals for schools financed from the EU Aid Programme for the Turkish Cypriot community. The third Call was published in March 2009 and is currently under evaluation.
