Services and transport turnover are mixed

The Statistical Service has announced the turnover indices with a new base year 2005=100 (provisional estimates) for various branches of transport by activity for January – March 2009.
The main developments by activity for the period of January – March 2009 were as follows.
Land Transport activity decreased by 10.8% compared to the corresponding period of 2008.
Water Transport turnover value increased by 81.6% in 2009 compared to the corresponding period of 2008.
Air Transport increased by 3.9%.
Postal and Courier activities turnover value increased by 2.7% compared to the corresponding period of 2008.
Meanwhile, in the sector of services the turnover index for the period January-March 2009 recorded a remarkable decrease of 19.6% on the sector of Accommodation Services (Hotels) whereas the sector of Food and Beverage Service Activities recorded an increase of 4.2% compared to the corresponding period of 2008.
The broader sector of Accommodation and Food Service Activities (Hotels & Restaurants) recorded a decrease of 2.8%.
Furthermore, a remarkable decrease of 13.3% was recorded on the sector of Travel Agencies and also a decrease of 1.4% was recorded on the sector of Telecommunications.
In contrast, compared to the corresponding period of 2008, an increase of 11.4% and 4.9% was recorded on the sectors of Legal & Accounting Activities and Architectural & Engineering Activities respectively.
Finally, a decrease of 1.5% was recorded on the sector of Computer Programming and related activities.
