Cyprus tourist arrivals (finally) increase again in June

After two months of decline, tourism arrivals in Cyprus finally recorded a decent increase in June, with the number rising by 8.8% to 307,237 in June 2008, compared with 282,465 in June 2007.
Prior to that, tourism arrivals had fallen in three months out of the first five months in 2008.
The main reason was an increase of 7.7% in tourist arrivals from the United Kingdom, which accounts for more than half of all arrivals.
UK arrivals rose from 148,941 in June 2007 to 160,373 in June 2008.
There was a 19.5% increase in arrivals from Russia, one of the most buoyant markets, with arrivals reaching 29,494 compared with 24,672 in June 2007.
Arrivals from Sweden rose by 17.6% to 18,373 from 15,933 in June 2007.
By contrast, there was a 2.8% was recorded in tourist arrivals from Germany (10,833 in June 2008 compared with 11,145 in June 2007).
For the period January – June 2008 arrivals of tourists totalled 989,851 compared with 964,097 in the corresponding period of 2007, recording an increase of 2.7%.
