The Council of Ministers has appointed a committee of inquiry to conduct a full investigation into last week’s collapse of part of the roof of the capital’s Municipal Theatre.
Government Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou announced here today that the Cabinet also took important decisions relating to the promotion of the safety of public buildings.
The three member Committee will be headed by George Ioannides professor at Greece's Metsovio Polytechnic, and will consist of members Civil Engineers Kostas Meletiou and Panicos Papadopoulos.
Stephanou said that the Committee will have all powers provided by the relevant legislation to conduct a full investigation into the cause of the incident and to apportion blame where it is due.
“The President of the Republic has given clear orders and instructions to apportion responsibility where it is due and to punish those who are found to be guilty”, the Spokesman stressed, adding that the government wants the investigation completed as soon as possible.
The Cabinet has decided to approve additional funds to speed up procedures for the construction of the National Theatre.
The Cabinet will invite everybody who is involved in the construction of public buildings as well as municipal authorities to carry out safety checks.
