Cyprus returns remains of Greek soldiers killed in 1974

Cyprus returned the remains of ten Greek nationals to their families on Tuesday, more than three decades after they were killed during the Turkish invasion of the island in 1974.

Two of the men were officially registered as missing in action, while the others were killed on the front line defending the Greek Cypriot side from the Turkish onslaught.

President Tassos Papadopoulos paid tribute to the 10 at a brief ceremony in the presence of Greek deputy defence minister Constantinos Tasoulas, after which the remains weree returned to Greece.

The Committee for Missing Persons, a U.N. committee mandated with investigations, has exhumed the remains of some 379 individuals from several recently discovered mass graves and is returning remains to families after being identified through DNA.
