But falls as a % of GDP

Tourism revenue in Cyprus rose higher than actual arrivals in 2007, increasing by 5.9% over the year earlier to CYP 1,085.7 mln (CYP 1.1 bln), according to the latest figures from the Statistical Service Cystat.

In the same period tourism arrivals rose by only 0.6% to 2.41 mln.

However, as a proportion of GDP, which the Statistical Service has estimated at CYP 9,066 mln in 2007, revenue fell to 12% in 2007 , compared with 12.2% of GDP in 2006 and a peak of 20.6% of GDP in 2000.

Expenditure figures for the whole of 2007 have not yet been made available but expenditure per tourist in December 2007 was CYP 404.7 per person (up from CYP 404.9 in 2006), while expenditure per person was CYP 38.5, compared with CYP 34 in December 2006.

Swedes were the biggest spenders in December 2007, at CYP 760.5 per person, followed by Finns at CYP 757.3.

The lowest spenders in December were Israelis, at CYP 135.4 per head (perhaps because of the shorter flying distance), followed by Greeks at CYP 244.7.
