The turnover value of water transport in Cyprus rose by 39% over the corresponding period of the previous year, according to the latest figures from the Statistical Service, Cystat.

The figures suggest that Cyprus’s shipping industry, the third largest in the EU after Greece and Malta, is booming, since the few mountain streams that exist are too small for river transport.

Total turnover of transport and communications activities in the same period rose by 16.3% in the same period.

After water transport, the next fastest rising category was auxiliary transport services, up 29%.

Telecommunications rose by 10.5%; post and courier activities rose by 7.5%; air transport rose by 7%; and land transport by 5%.Â
