Cyprus pumps 70% more greenhouse gases than in 1990

Cyprus pumped 70% more greenhouse gases into the air in 2004 than in 1990, according to the latest figures.

The Statistical Service reported that Cyprus emitted 10.3 mln (10,281.04 thousand) tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent, compared with 6.0 mln (6,010.62 thousand) in 1990.

The main polluter is carbon dioxide (CO2), up 78% to 8.2 mln tonnes from 4.6 mln in 1990, followed by nitrous oxide (NO2), up 63% to 1.1 mln tonnes, from 0.7 mln in 1990.

Methane (CH4) was up 35% to 957,970 tonnes from 681,570 in 1990.
