The European Commission has invited individual companies or joint ventures from EU member states to express interest for the rehabilitation of the former U.S.-owned Cyprus Mining Corporation (CMC) mining and ore processing sites in the Lefka region in the Turkish occupied north.

The abandoned facilities have over the years caused extensive harm to the environment and polluted the sea at the Xeros locality, a former loading dock used by the CMC copper mines.

The funding for the whole project has a ceiling of EUR 900,000 for all its phases – study and planning requirements, as well as terms and specifications of the work, according to a circular distributed by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KEVE) to all its members.

The financing of the project is part of the European Commission Regulation for aid to the Turkish Cypriot community, which has been approved by the government of the Republic of Cyprus, KEVE said.

The deadline for the expression of interest is February 23 and details, information and the relevant application forms are available online at http://ec.europa.eu/europeaid/tender/data/d24/AOF73724.htm

KEVE concluded in its circular that “it encourages Cypriot companies to express interest in the project.”
