Energy statistics released by the Cyprus Statistical Service CYSTAT for 1995-2006 show a sharp rise on the consumption of both petroleum products and electricity since 1995.

Total sales of petroleum products rose by 55% to 2.4 mln tonnes in 2005, from 1.6 mln tonnes in 1995.

Heavy fuel oil, mainly used to generate electricity, accounted for more than half of the petroleum consumption. Sales of heavy fuel oil rose by 81% to 1.4 mln tonnes in 2005 from 759 thousand in 1995. Of the 1.4 mln total, 1.1 mln was taken by the Electricity Authority of Cyprus.

Total consumption of electricity also shot up, rising by 80% to 3.9 bln kwh in 2005 from 2.2 bln kwh in 1995.

The largest increase was recorded by domestic consumers, who with more airconditioning units, more gadgets and more electronic games increased consumption by 89% to 1.4 bln kwh, from 759 thousand in 1995.
