Cypriot elected to UN anti torture committee

Andreas Mavrommatis, former Cyprus’ permanent representative to the UN, has been elected chairman of the UN committee against torture for a two-year term.

The election took place at the start of the 36th meeting of the UN committee, meeting in Geneva from 1 to 19 of May.

The committee, based in Geneva, meets twice a year and comprises 10 members, independent experts. It has been in place since 1988 and its main task is to monitor the application of the convention against torture. It examines state reports and submits observations and recommendations to states party to the convention.

The committee will study the reports from the US, Georgia and Peru at this session. (CNA)
