Cyprus will be host to the prestigious academic forum, the European Consortium for Political Research (ECPR), on April 25-30, when

hundreds of distinguished academics from all over the world will congregate at Intercollege to present papers on, and discuss the key political science issues of the day.

These will include among many others globalisation, political identity, Europe, political Islam and, of course, the Cyprus problem.

The ECPR was formed in 1970 by representatives of 8 political sciences institutions in Europe.

The membership has now grown to over 300 universities, research and teaching institutions and associate members in Europe and elsewhere.

It is the first time it will be held in Cyprus.

Intercollege’s Professor Keith Webb, who is the main coordinator for the forum in Cyprus this year, noted that the ECPR is a great opportunity for more senior academics to hear fresh ideas from younger academics, some of whom are still completing their PhD.

Underlining the scholarly nature of the event, Webb noted that workshop participants can only attend if they present a paper.

“There is no room for free-riders”, he said.

Two events that will be held in public, however, are the Round Table on the Cyprus Question on Tuesday April 25 at 17.00, chaired by Cyprus researcher Tim Potier, and the presentation of the Wildenmann Prize and the Rokkan Lecture given by former President of Cyprus George Vassiliou at 17.30 on Thursday April 27.
