University application in two weeks’ time

Cyprus College, soon to be renamed as Cyprus International University, announced on Thursday that it has made an agreement with a strategic partner in a bid to establish itself as a regional academic centre.

Laureate International Universities (LIU), the largest international network of universities in the world, with market capitalisation of USD 2.5 bln, is taking a 45% stake in Cyprus College.

Cyprus College President Andreas Eleftheriades said that Cyprus College will retain its autonomy (both administrative and academic) and its identity.

The agreement will allow Cyprus College, which will apply for university status in two weeks’ time, to take advantage of Laureate International Universities global network of accredited institutions.

This network includes University of Liverpool, European University of Madrid, Les Roches Hotel Management School, Glion Institute of Higher Education, Ecole Superieuer du Commerce Exteriure and Walden University.

Laureate International Universities currently comprises more than 215,000 students, 15,000 academics and 5,000 administrative personnel, with more institutions joining the network on an almost continuous basis.

For example, students from other universities in the network would come to Cyprus for one semester.

Speaking at a press conference in Nicosia on Thursday Dr Juan Salcedo, Dean of Laureate International Universities, said that the fact that the language of instruction was in English was a plus for Cyprus College.

“Because the medium of instruction is Egnlish it allows Cyprus to attract a large number of foreign students,” he said.

Private colleges Frederick Institute of Technology and Intercollege also applied last week for university status.
