New Finance Minister appointed

Michalakis Sarris has been appointed to the post of Finance Minister, to replace Makis Keravnos who resigned to take up a senior post at the Hellenic Bank.

An official statement said that ‘President of the Republic Tassos Papadopoulos, acting in accordance with the authority vested in him by the Constitution, appointed Michalakis Sarris to the post of Finance Minister.’

Sarris, born in 1946 in Nicosia studied at the London School of Economics and majored at the Wayne State University in the US. In 1972 he joined the Research Department of the Central Bank of Cyprus, then in 1974 he moved to the Bank of Cyprus, while from 1975 until 2004 he was employed at the World Bank. Following his retirement, he has been serving on the Board of Laiki Bank. He speaks Greek, English, French, Spanish and Portuguese.
