Education goes up faster than inflation

The consumer price inflation rate climbed again in September, reaching 2.6%, compared with 2.5% in August 2007 and 2.4% in September 2006.

Inflation has been slowly climbing in Cyprus since March. For the period January-September 2007 the CPI recorded an increase of 2.0% compared to the corresponding period of 2006.

The consumer price index measured 105.96, a rise of 1.31% on the previous month.

The Statistical Service reported that this was mainly due to increases in the prices of clothing and footwear, following the end of summer sales, as well as to increases in the prices of certain fresh fruit and vegetables, fresh meat, electricity, barbers and hairdressers and tuition fees of private educational institution and part-time educational coaching centres.

As no middle class parent will be surprised to learn, the price of education, which is set every year in September-October, rose faster than overall inflation in September.

Education prices jumped by 3.1% compared with August, which put the rise compared with September 2006 at 4.3%.
