Registered unemployed down year on year

The number of unemployed people registered at the District Labour Offices on the last day of July 2007 rose by 1,464 to 12,191, compared with 10,727 persons in June 2007, according to the Statistical Service Cystat.

The increase was mainly recorded in the sectors of education, wholesale and retail trade, and public administration.

However, in comparison with July 2006 a decrease of 926 was recorded, which was mainly observed in the sectors of manufacturing, transport and construction.

Cyprus had one of the lowest unemployment rates in the EU in June, according the Eurostat data.

This showed an unemployment rate in Cyprus of 3.9%, compared with an EU average of 6.9%.
