Nine out ten Cypriots use a car or a motorcycle as their main mode of daily transport, according to an EU flash Barometer conducted in May 2007.
Cyprus ranks first in EU 27 with 87.6% of the Cypriots using a private vehicle as their daily means of transportation, followed by France with 69.1%, Ireland 68.9% Slovenia with 66.2% and Malta with 65.2%. The EU average is 53%.
According to the findings of the flash Eurobarometer, Cyprus recorded the lowest percentage (3%) as regards the use of public transportation, whereas Latvia ranks fist in this respect with 47%.
The survey established that motorised individual transport is the most widespread in the EU with 53%, followed by non motorised individual transport with 23%, while the least popular mode is using public transport with 21%.
However, the majority of the EU citizens (about eight out of ten) share the opinion that the type of the car and the way people use them have an important impact on the environment in the respondent’s area.
