Registered unemployed down y/y in June 2007

The number of registered unemployed fell over the year-earlier period in June, as the unemployed persons registered at the District Labour Offices on the last day of June 2007, reached 10,727 persons compared with 12,658 in June 2006.

Compared with May 2007, the number was only slightly lower at 10,802.

The main sectors recording a fall so far this year have been manufacturing (down by 379 year on year), construction (down by 207), and wholesale and retail trade (down by 176).

June marked a big jump compared with the previous month in the number of registered unemployed from the education sector: up by 682 people to 1,029. However, these are probably all retirees, who are entitled to six months unemployment benefit upon retirement.

Compared with Jan-June 2007, the number of unemployed in education ahs fallen by 58 people to 420. FM
