Meat is a better buy

A breakdown of food producer prices in Cyprus shows that tomatoes have been leading the high increase in food-price inflation over the past 12 months.

Prices of tomatoes have shot up by an average 75.6% year on year in the period April 2006 to March 2007.

The second highest increase was for prices of fresh vegetables, up and average 29.4% over the year to March.

Fruits and other products rose 21.6%, while cucumbers rose 17.8%.

It is not clear why prices of these products have risen so high but at a guess, maybe we didn’t have enough rain this winter.

In the same 12-month period pork meat prices fell by an average of 9.8% compared with the same period of the previous year, while chicken meat prices fell by 4.2%.

Souvlaki therefore looks like it will be a bargain this summer, as long as you eat it without the salad, of course.

The price of cow’s milk rose less than overall prices, by just 1.7%.
