The Association of Cyprus Travel Agents (ACTA) has decided to sue the airlines for excess charges and threatened that as of November 16, it will cease to collect the excess fees that are dumped on the unsuspecting public.

ACTA Chairman Akis Kelepeshis had earlier complained to the Financial Mirror regarding the way the airlines were advertising very low rates, but then were piling up excess fees in the form of fuel and insurance surcharge on customers, pushing fares substantially higher.

ACTA attempted to find a formula through which the airlines would agree to merge all their charges and publish one rate, but with the exception of four airlines, all the rest decided not to cooperate with ACTA.

“Only Aegean, El-Al, Emirates and Gulf Air agreed to our request to combined the fares and excess fees into one rate,” said ACTA in an announcement, adding that the lack of cooperation by the airlines leaves them no other choice but to resort to legal action and stop collection the excess charges on behalf of the airlines.

ACTA has wowed to sue the airlines and as of November 16 stop collecting the excess fees of all the airlines that fail to cooperate with it.
