The demand for notebook computers is booming in the Asia-Pacific region with India recording the strongest personal computer (PC) growth, International Data Corporation said on Thursday.

The third quarter marked the biggest notebook growth in the region outside of Japan, said an IDC Corp. report.

PCs sold crossed 10.9 million units in the three months from July through September, up 11% quarter-on-quarter and 19% year-on-year.

“Notebook shipments for the region grew by an astonishing 54% year-on-year, while desktop PCs only grew 12%,” The Business Times quoted IDC associate director Bryan Ma as saying.

“Markets like China, Taiwan, India and South Korea contributed the most to notebook growth,” he added.

India recorded the strongest year-on-year growth at 167%, the breakdown showed.

Low-cost 64-bit desktop PCs sparked consumer interest in China.

Following a dismal performance in the second quarter, the market in Taiwan rebounded as shipments grew 29%.

Low-end PCs continued to fuel consumer replacements in South Korea.

Lenovo led the vendor market in the third quarter, followed by HP, Dell, Founder and Acer. (dpa)
