Gender gap lives on in Cyprus

Statistics released by the Statistical Service show that Cyprus still has a long way to go in terms of gender equality, with only 17.5% of women holding “decision-making posts” at administrative and managerial level and only 23% holding senior level civil servant posts.

Only 16% of the House of Representatives are women and only 19% of local governing bodies such as municipal councils.

Women fair slightly better in a profession that is normally known for its traditional culture, namely law: 32% of judges are female.

The figures did not show the difference in pay scales for males and females doing the same job, but anecdotal evidence suggests that these would show that the gap is just as wide in pay as it is in promotion prospects.
