“Technology: the catalyst for Development and Public Sector reform”, an event organised by Microsoft Cyprus at the Philoxenia Conference Hall in Nicosia, concluded with great success last Tuesday.

Participants included government officials and specialised staff from Microsoft who outlined their positions on issues relating to technology in the field of education, the police, and the development of new and innovative technologies in the public sector.

The event highlighted the importance of technology in the process of Public Sector reform for the benefit of both civil servants and citizens. During the event, speakers outlined how technology can serve citizens and public sector personnel, the ways in which the introduction of modern technological innovations to the Cyprus Police can create a safer society, and how new skills development can strengthen the education system.

“The Government congratulates Microsoft Cyprus for this important initiative”, said Constantinos Petrides, Deputy Minister to the President of Cyprus. “It is clear that we cannot reform our Public Sector, nor can we achieve growth, without upgrading our technological infrastructure in the interest of all. Unfortunately, the Public Sector is lagging behind and many tasks remain on hold. However, with the support of the private sector, we have the chance to identify new opportunities and transition to the digital era”, added Petrides.

The event also featured an in-depth analysis of issues relating to: the modernisation of call centres, the upgrading of service centres, the familiarisation of government employees with new technologies, the effectiveness of training of government workers, the importance of cybersecurity, and How new approaches to teaching and learning can better prepare the students today for the workforce of tomorrow.

“Cyprus’ approach to technology and its impact on education is very impressive, as was the large turnout and quality of attendees at this event”, said Alessandro Giacobbe, General Manager Education Solutions and Partners, Microsoft Corporation. “The variety and quality of the presentations, spanning a wide range of topics from teaching & learning to data privacy & security, from gamification to the Internet of Things, and much more, was excellent, and so was the depth of the discussions that followed. All in all it was a very successful event with many learnings and follow-ups, as well as a number of great ideas and initiatives we will be able to replicate in other areas of the world”, added Giacobbe.
