The role of the Russian Federation “is of utmost significance” to achieve geopolitical stability on an international and regional level, Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades said on Saturday.

“Cyprus and Russia share a historic relationship,” he said, noting political and financial relations, Moscow’s consistent stance vis-a-vis the Cyprus issue and the resilience of local Russian businesses amid difficult times.
Addressing the 9th Cyprus-Russian Festival in Limassol, President Anastasiades said it comprises an “annual celebration of the solid and long-standing ties of friendship” between the two countries, reaffirming “the deep-rooted quality of everything that unites us”.
The President reiterated the “sincere and deep appreciation” of the government and the people of Cyprus for Russia’s consistent and principled stance on the Cyprus issue.
Furthermore, he referred to the role of the Russian Federation, which, as he put it “is of utmost significance” to achieve geopolitical stability on an international and regional level.
He said the Cyprus government will make every effort to foster even stronger links between the two peoples, as well as utilize the potential of the bilateral dialogue during these challenging times.
In its capacity as an EU member state, Cyprus has the political will to contribute in a pragmatic and constructive spirit to the establishment of confidence and mutually beneficial cooperation in the wider European arena, the President noted.
Moreover, he expressed gratitude for the support, confidence and continuous display of trust by a very large number of Russian citizens, who maintained their businesses and investments in Cyprus, during a particularly difficult period.
“Many Russian friends have established a home in Cyprus” he went on, noting that these interpersonal links are immensely valuable for bilateral relations “that have proven resilient and durable, even when tried and tested”.
He cited relations in the fields of economy, investment, trade and tourism, as well as the long-standing political dialogue “at the highest level”, which are strengthened through common cultural, educational and religious bonds.
“I am convinced that the common intention and desire of our governments is to continue upgrading and enriching the multifaceted relations between our countries,” the President of the Republic said.
He also welcomed the increasing flow of high-quality Russian tourists to the island, noting that “this is a trend we seek to promote further”.
