Cyprus sees another steep rise in unemployment in May

Registered unemployment rose by a steep 30% over the year earlier in May, having risen by 27.7% in April, according to the latest figures from the Statistical Service, Cystat. The number of registered unemployed rose by 10,262 to 44,424 persons, from 34,162 in May 2012. On a seasonally adjusted basis the number in May 2013 was 45,736 persons, up from 44,333 in April. Cystat does not report an unemployment rate for registered unemployment.

Separately, Eurostat reported an unemployment rate of 15.6% in April, up from 14.5% in March and 11.5% in May 2012. Compared with May 2012, the biggest increase in registered unemployment was recorded in whole sale and retail trade (an increase of 2,464), public administration (1,391), construction (1,242), manufacturing (1,050), and accommodation and food service activities (639). Unemployed newcomers to the labour market rose by 851.
