Noble Laureate secures 2.2 million for research on European employment

Nobel prize Laureate and University of Cyprus European Union Studies professor, Christophoros Pissarides, has secured a €2.2 million grant for a research project concerning employment in Europe, from the European Research Council` Advanced Grant.

According to a UCY press release this is the biggest research funding granted by the ERC Advanced Grant to the University. The project will create new job positions for ten researchers at the University.

Pissarides has told a press conference the project will begin this month and continue for 5 years. The first part of the project will cover employment in Europe including the new member-states and will examine the level of employment and the new jobs created. The second part will focus on unemployment in times of financial crisis.

UCY Rector Constantinos Christofides said that out of the University budget amounting to 108 million, 42 million stem from own resources, noting that the state should link the University`s budget to its success in securing funding on research.
