Cyprus ranks fourth as regards notifications in the EU rapid alert system for all dangerous consumer products, called RAPEX.

Notifications in RAPEX do not include food, pharmaceutical or medical devices. They include other products presenting risks to the health and safety of consumers.

According to the RAPEX annual report for 2010, Cyprus ranked fourth among the 30 countries participating in the rapid exchange of information via their central contact points and the Commission for measures taken to prevent or restrict the marketing or use of products posing a serious risk to the health and safety of consumers.

Cyprus' notifications in the RAPEX system amounted to 178, or 9% of all RAPEX notifications. Overall, in 2010 there were 1.963 notifications. Germany ranks first with 204 notifications, followed by Bulgaria with 192, Hungary with 191, Cyprus with 178 and Greece with 159. In 2009, Cyprus' notifications amounted to 103.

According to the press release, Cyprus' better results in 2010 are due to the improved organisation and coordination among the Cypriot competent authorities, as well as the experiences gained through the years.

Cyprus' national contact point in the RAPEX system is the Competition and Consumer Protection Service of the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Tourism.

Based on the official statistical data by the European Commission, in 2010, 58% of all products included in the notifications were from China.
