Mayor of Nicosia Eleni Mavrou launched Nicosia's effort on Monday to be pronounced European Cultural Capital for 2017.

Speaking at a press conference, Mavrou said various municipalities in the Nicosia District, as well as the Larnaca Municipality, are supporting Nicosia's candidacy, which she said gave ''new dynamics to the participation of Nicosia.''

Mavrou expressed hope that all towns in Cyprus would join in the effort, which would enhance cooperation and expand social, economic, cultural aspects.

Deputy Mayor of Larnaca Alexis Michaelides explained that the Larnaca Municipal Council decided that the priority for the title should be given to Nicosia because it is Cyprus' capital and the only divided capital in Europe, due to the 1974 Turkish invasion and occupation.

Replying to questions, Mavrou said she would be happy if other municipalities followed the example of Larnaca and supported Nicosia's candidacy.

She pointed out that the dossiers with the candidacies are to be officially submitted in May and that the European Council would announce the Cultural Capital for 2017 in 2013.

Mavrou also said that over the past few years the cost for a candidacy and the investments made range from 7 to 80 million EUR, depending on size, however the benefits from gaining the title concern the creation of infrastructure in the broader area, new jobs, tourism, and new economic activities.
