Leader of the Republican Turkish Party (CTP) Mehmet Ali Talat is set to win the presidency elections in northern Cyprus on Sunday April 17, putting an end to 40 years of Rauf Denktash’s dominance of the Turkish Cypriot political scene.

Moves either within Cyprus or abroad to reinvigorate a solution to the Cyprus problem have been on hold until these elections are over.

Talat said this week that Turkish Cypriots “should give a strong message to the world once again and say that they want solution, peace, and unification with the EU and the world.”
