U.S. President Barack Obama arrived on Thursday in Norway to receive his Nobel Peace Prize, with live television pictures showing his plane touching down safely at Oslo's main airport.

Obama is the third sitting U.S. president, along with Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson, to win the prize. Jimmy Carter was honoured two decades after he left office. Other prominent Nobel peace laureates include Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King Jr. and Mother Teresa.

Obama is scheduled to meet Norway's Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg and the Norwegian royal family before receiving his medal at a ceremony due to begin at 1200 GMT.
